Why Protecting the Environment makes Good Business Sense?

Tuesday 11 June 2013
Divani Apollon Palace

Athens - Greece

Last year during the 2nd Blue Shipping Summit the question on our minds was: does it make business sense to be environmentally conscious? And the participants discovered that YES it does make sense to be eco-friendly, however not for everyone. The aim of the 3rd Blue Shipping Summit is to analyze all the components of being environmentally friendly and profitable. Does one automatically exclude the other? Many people would argue that YES new regulations will be raising the cost of shipping an ultimately the consumer will pay the price. Others say that it is possible to innovate, stay ahead of the curve and still make money.

Technological companies have had ample time to come up with solutions that fit a spectrum of shipping situations. And now it’s time for the shipowners and charterers to decide which of those solutions are right for them, or perhaps say that no, technology has not come up with the right answer for the Shipping Industry yet.

During this difficult market, any change seems like a lot to take on. But as where some people see downturn, others see opportunity. The Shipping Industry is trying to see the opportunities in these great changes in todays over regulated world.

So we are asking the shipping community the following questions:

  • Does it make sense to jump on the environmental wagon first?

  • What are the benefits and what are the disadvantages to going green?

  • How do we, as an industry, effectively manage our energy consumption, which is such a big part of our operating costs?

  • How must long-lasting sustainable business decisions be made to continue our business?

  • How do we make profits, stay environmentally conscious, and most importantly relevant and attractive to charters?

The 3rd Blue Shipping Summit is once again gathering the leading policy makers, politicians, shipowners, shipbuilders, marine equipment manufacturers, financiers, investors, charters, ship brokers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, journalists, and other members of the international maritime community in order to learn, discuss and debate all contemporary and urgent environmental themes, which are of vital importance to the future of the maritime industry.

Looking forward to welcoming you in Athens,

     Session 1

Setting the Scene - Analyzing the Progress of the Environmental Regulations and Implementation

  • Is the regulation’s ‘soft’ approach for sulphur content compliance coming to an end? Are we going to see harsher implementations of these regulations?
  • What ramifications do you think will result from non-compliance? (Routes will change? No impact? Hopeful of an easing of the regulatory guidelines?)
  • Does ‘new’ automatically mean better? Or does years of experience account for a more sound approach to running ships?
  • What would be the new opportunities after going eco friendly?
  • What are the benefits and disadvantages of changing with the changing world?
  • What would it take to be compliant within the new regulations?
  • How much would it cost a shipowner to become compliant?
  • Has the industry managed to calculate the cost of the comparative advantage of environmental Technology?
  • Is the transition from scrapping to ship recycling really happening in our time?

The market of sustainable shipping and future shipping trends

  • Is ‘innovation’ killing our business model?
  • Is it time to reconsider how we run our shipping companies to make profits?

  • What would our new business plan be? What are we going to get rid of and what will we keep?
  • Will charterers care that the ships are more efficient and burn low sulphur fuel? Will they contribute to the cost?
  • What circumstances will make a shipowner reconsider changing or modifying his existing fleet?
  • Who would give financing for these projects?
  • What are the new opportunities that come with the increase of the ship recycling as a result of influx of vessels being scrapped?
  • Will fuel efficient ships be more attractive to charterers whereas  conventional ships will not causing implications for scrapping and price of scrap?
